URSA MATER. A Mother's Love in the Desert

Ursa Mater, affectionately known to the citizens of Black Rock City (Burning Man) as Mamma Penny Bear has returned from her trip to the desert.

Third in our series of penny sculptures, this piece has the most coins we have ever placed to create an effect with a fur coat of over 200,000 pennies. Carved from foam and layered in concrete with pennies placed in it vertically, it took us and our team of 12 volunteers, 4 months to complete the project.

Over 65,000 people attended Burning Man in 2017 and it was not uncommon for us to hear from attendees who visited us who told just that Ursa Mater was their personal favorite art installation at the event. That was humbling to hear, as the 350 pieces on display were some of the finest we have ever seen at Burning Man.

Ursa Mater is currently being cleaned and readied in our shop in Hayward, CA for her next tip.

Ursa Mater was made possible by an honorarium by Black Rock Arts. Hundreds of dollars in pennies were donated to the project by friends and volunteers.
